Over the past half-century, the BMW Art Car series has served as a dynamic intersection of art and automotive engineering. This unique collection features 20 "rolling sculptures" that reflect diverse artistic movements from minimalism to digital art. To commemorate this milestone, BMW has launched a world tour showcasing these iconic vehicles across five continents. The exhibition program includes numerous events and collaborations, highlighting the rich history and innovative spirit of the BMW Art Car project.

A Journey Through Time and Creativity

In the vibrant autumn of 2023, the BMW Art Car World Tour embarked on an ambitious journey spanning Europe, Asia, and beyond. Since its inception in 1975, this extraordinary initiative has brought together some of the most celebrated artists of our time, including Alexander Calder, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Julie Mehretu. Each artist was invited to transform a BMW vehicle into a mobile masterpiece, creating a dialogue between art and technology.

The tour kicked off with a spectacular display in Vienna, where iconic Art Cars by renowned figures like Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, David Hockney, and Jeff Koons were showcased at prestigious venues such as the Museum of Applied Arts and the SPARK Art Fair. Meanwhile, Julie Mehretu's latest creation, the BMW M Hybrid V8, embarked on an Asian tour, making its debut at Art Basel in Hong Kong. This cutting-edge artwork exemplifies the fusion of artistic expression and cutting-edge automotive design.

To honor this significant anniversary, the BMW Museum will present a special exhibition starting June 16, 2024. This exhibit will feature a comprehensive overview of all BMW 3 Series models alongside the BMW M3 Art Cars by Sandro Chia, Michael Jagamara Nelson, and Ken Done. Additionally, BMW is releasing a range of new art and lifestyle products, including limited-edition miniature replicas of the Art Cars and an updated catalogue featuring interviews and essays on each piece.

Throughout 2026, the BMW Art Car World Tour will continue to travel the globe, engaging audiences with its blend of creativity and innovation. Important museums and classic car platforms are also joining the celebration, with notable events planned at venues like the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este and the Louwman Museum in The Hague.

From a journalist's perspective, the BMW Art Car World Tour underscores the enduring power of collaboration between art and industry. It serves as a testament to how innovation can thrive when boundaries are blurred, and disciplines converge. This global tour not only celebrates the past but also paves the way for future explorations in art and design. The BMW Art Car project reminds us that creativity knows no limits and continues to inspire new generations of artists and engineers alike.
