The Moses Lake School District held a regular board meeting on Thursday, where several key decisions were made. The meeting acknowledged the outstanding contributions of Superintendent Carol Lewis, provided updates on financial performance, passed multiple policies, and finalized a letter to state officials regarding transgender policies in schools. This comprehensive meeting addressed various aspects of district operations, ensuring continued improvement and alignment with community values.

Carol Lewis was recognized for her dedication and leadership since taking over as acting superintendent in May 2024. Following the departure of the previous superintendent, Lewis initially served in an interim capacity before being appointed to the permanent role on November 7. Board Chair Kirryn Jensen praised Lewis for her efforts in engaging the community and fostering support. Board members Paul Hill and Ryan Coulston also commended her hard work and ability to navigate challenges, emphasizing her significant impact on the district's progress.

Finance Director Mitch Thompson presented a positive financial update for the district. As of January 2025, revenues collected amounted to $53.9 million, representing 39.75% of the budgeted amount. Expenditures stood at approximately $52 million or 38.34% of the budgeted expenses. Notably, this marked the first time in three years that revenues exceeded expenditures, with a surplus of $1.9 million. This turnaround from previous deficits highlights the district's improved fiscal management under Thompson's guidance.

The board unanimously approved three policy changes. The first policy allows school staff to decide on indoor recess based on weather conditions, with notifications sent through district communication platforms. Another policy update modifies guidelines for board representatives, including extending legislative representative terms and delegating responsibilities. Lastly, a change in the budget implementation policy removes restrictions on involuntary wage deductions, except for legally mandated ones. These updates aim to streamline operations and align with current needs.

In a significant decision, the board resolved to send a letter to State Superintendent Chris Reykdal and Governor Bob Ferguson. Authored by a concerned citizen and endorsed by all five board members, the letter outlines plans to prevent transgender athletes from participating in girls' sports and to update locker room and restroom guidelines in accordance with federal mandates. Despite no known transgender students in the district, this move reflects the board's stance on these issues.

The meeting underscored the district's commitment to recognizing leadership, improving financial stability, updating policies, and addressing community concerns. With these actions, the Moses Lake School District continues to prioritize transparency and responsible governance, setting a strong foundation for future initiatives.
