On National Therapy Animal Day, the campus of Southern Miss witnessed an outpouring of joy as therapy dogs graced the Centennial Lawn. These animals, accompanied by their dedicated handlers, provided a much-needed break from academic stress for many students. Among those who experienced this uplifting event was USM student Amarely Salinas, whose day took a delightful turn upon encountering these furry friends. From American Bullies to Golden Retrievers and even a giant Schnauzer, each dog attracted numerous admirers, creating moments of pure happiness.

The presence of therapy dogs on campus serves a deeper purpose beyond mere entertainment. Handler Mel Lowery explained that the initiative aims to alleviate stress not only among students but also in hospitals and assisted living facilities. Her journey began with her beloved Golden Retriever, Cash Money, who played a pivotal role in introducing therapy dogs to the USM campus. Despite the loss of Cash to cancer, Lowery's commitment to this cause remains unwavering. She has since adopted Sunday, a young puppy currently in training, to continue the legacy of providing comfort and support within the community.

Motivated by the growing demand for therapy animals, Lowery is spearheading efforts to establish a local support group in Hattiesburg. This initiative seeks to assist others in certifying their pets as therapy dogs, thereby expanding the pool of available animals for various institutions such as hospitals and assisted living centers. By educating the public about the certification process, Lowery hopes to inspire more individuals to join this noble endeavor. Such efforts exemplify the power of compassion and community spirit, demonstrating how small acts of kindness can create significant positive change.
