According to reports from the local sheriff’s office, the accident occurred when one driver swerved to avoid an animal on the road. The crash took place at the intersection of Plank Road and Switzer Road, leading to severe injuries for several individuals involved. Emergency services rushed to the scene and managed to rescue one of the drivers from a burning vehicle. This tragic event has left the community mourning the loss of two individuals and questioning road safety measures.
The sequence of events began around 9:43 p.m., when deputies were called to the intersection following reports of a multi-vehicle collision. Upon investigation, it was revealed that an 18-year-old driver named Vance Peterson was traveling west on Plank Road in a red Ford F150. As he attempted to dodge a deer, his vehicle veered into oncoming traffic. While narrowly missing a landscaping truck, the F150 collided head-on with a white GMC Sierra. Moments later, a red Dodge Ram struck the already damaged F150, causing it to catch fire.
Peterson, who was trapped inside the burning vehicle, was swiftly rescued by first responders who broke the driver-side window. Despite their efforts, he sustained significant burns and fractures, requiring immediate transport to Loyola Hospital via helicopter. Among those involved in the crash were Erick Garcia-Porcayo and Rosalio Porcayo-Porcayo, passengers in the GMC Sierra, who tragically lost their lives at the scene. The driver of the GMC, identified as Yahir Porcayo-Porcayo, also suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove for emergency treatment.
Meanwhile, the sole occupant of the Dodge Ram, a 30-year-old man, did not report any injuries.
