The Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) at Utah State University has unveiled the fourth in a series of six white papers, highlighting findings from a comprehensive study conducted this fall. This research supports "A Bolder Way Forward," a statewide initiative aimed at enhancing the well-being of Utah girls, women, and their families. The latest report delves into three key areas: financial literacy, higher education attainment, and K-12 initiatives. With a survey involving 4,721 participants, including 1,123 men, this study provides valuable data on perceptions and attitudes towards women's education and economic empowerment.

Empowering Women Through Financial Literacy, Education, and Early Initiatives

In the heart of autumn, the UWLP released critical insights from its recent survey, conducted between October 1 and November 20, 2024. The study involved 4,721 Utah residents and focused on three pivotal areas:

• Financial Literacy: The survey revealed that while nearly all respondents agreed on the importance of women being financially competent, 14.9% felt uncertain about managing personal finances independently. This highlights the need for enhanced educational resources to boost economic independence among women.
• Higher Education Attainment: Respondents emphasized the value of higher education for intellectual growth and long-term wellbeing. Despite strong support, barriers like childcare emerged as significant obstacles for women pursuing advanced degrees.
• K-12 Initiatives: Over 91.5% agreed that advanced coursework is equally important for girls and boys. However, concerning disparities were noted in math scores between genders, particularly in 4th and 8th grades, prompting calls for further investigation into underlying causes.

The report underscores the importance of addressing these issues to ensure that every girl and woman in Utah can thrive. Susan Madsen, lead researcher and director of the UWLP, invited the public to explore the full report, noting that it builds on data collected in 2023 and offers valuable insights for policymakers and educators alike.
